Mountain Forests of the Gorillas

General Overview

Rwanda is a small, landlocked country in East-Central Africa, bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda is defined by rolling highlands, mist-covered mountains, and fertile valleys, creating one of Africa’s most scenic landscapes.

Following a tragic history marked by the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has undergone a remarkable transformation and is now widely recognized for its stability, safety, and forward-looking governance. The country has become a model for conservation, sustainable tourism, and community-based development, offering visitors a deeply meaningful and uplifting travel experience.

Rwanda is best known for its mountain gorilla trekking, one of Africa’s most powerful wildlife encounters. Volcanoes National Park, part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area, protects the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes and is home to a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.

Beyond gorillas, Rwanda offers diverse ecosystems and wildlife experiences. Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest mountain rainforests, is renowned for its chimpanzee trekking, rich biodiversity, and canopy walkway. In the east, Akagera National Park features classic savanna landscapes and is now home to the Big Five, following successful conservation reintroductions.

Cultural and historical experiences add further depth to Rwanda’s appeal. The capital city, Kigali, is clean, vibrant, and home to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important site of remembrance and reflection. Along the western border, Lake Kivu provides a tranquil retreat with scenic shorelines, fishing villages, and sunset cruises.

From misty volcanoes and ancient forests to savannas and lakeside escapes, Rwanda offers a rare blend of wildlife, resilience, and natural beauty.
