Zambia
Premier, unspoilt African Safari destination

General Overview
Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa, bordered by eight nations: Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Malawi. Named after the mighty Zambezi River, the country is known for its vast wilderness areas, abundant waterways, and some of Africa’s most authentic safari experiences.
Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, Zambia gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964. Since then, it has maintained a reputation for political stability and warm hospitality. While copper mining has long played a central role in the economy, tourism has become increasingly important, drawing visitors in search of unspoiled landscapes and low-density wildlife encounters.
Zambia is synonymous with walking safaris, a tradition pioneered in South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations. The park is celebrated for its high concentrations of game, diverse birdlife, and intimate safari experiences along the Luangwa River.
The Zambezi River dominates Zambia’s southern border and is home to one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles—Victoria Falls, shared with neighboring Zimbabwe and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upstream, the river flows through dramatic gorges and tranquil channels, offering exceptional canoeing, fishing, and river safaris.
Further west lies Lower Zambezi National Park, where wildlife thrives along the riverbanks against a backdrop of escarpments and open floodplains. To the north, Kafue National Park, one of Africa’s largest conservation areas, features diverse ecosystems ranging from wetlands and woodlands to open plains, supporting an impressive variety of wildlife.
Zambia’s natural beauty extends beyond its parks. Remote waterfalls, traditional villages, and vast open skies create a sense of space and authenticity rarely found elsewhere. With its commitment to conservation and community-based tourism, Zambia offers travelers a deeply immersive and rewarding African experience.
