A First Timer's Guide to Victoria Falls: Zambia or Zimbabwe Side

Victoria Falls sits on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and both sides offer a completely different way of experiencing one of the world's great natural wonders. If it is your first visit, choosing a side (or both) is one of the first questions we help clients answer.

The Zimbabwe side, based in Victoria Falls town, gives you the wider and more dramatic view of the falls, particularly during the high water months from roughly February to May. Walking paths run right along the gorge and you get close enough to feel the spray on your face. The town itself has grown into a proper tourism hub with a good range of restaurants, curio markets and activity operators, all within easy walking distance of most hotels.

The Zambia side, centred around Livingstone, feels quieter and more relaxed. The view of the falls from this side is narrower but you get access to unique experiences such as swimming in Devil's Pool right on the edge of the falls during the low water season, usually from around August to January. Livingstone also has excellent access to activities on the Zambezi River and a slightly more laid back pace than its busier neighbour.

Many of our clients choose to base themselves on one side and cross over for a day to see the falls from the other angle, since the two views genuinely complement each other. Activities such as white water rafting, sunset cruises, helicopter flights and bungee jumping are available from both sides, so your choice often comes down to which town's atmosphere and accommodation style appeals more.
